A Report On The Translation Project Of TV Play Mother-in-Law Coming

This thesis is a Chinese to English translation report. It analyzes the project and records the entire process of translation. Meanwhile, it intends to analyze and discuss some special cases in the translation of the TV play.This paper selected the Chinese to English subtitle translation of Chinese TV series Mother-in-Law Coming as a case study. Translating methods are discussed in the process of subtitling translation of abused words, Chinese idioms and some other Chinese unique culture. This thesis aims to record the whole process of the subtitle translation of TV series subtitles, including pre-translated analysis conducted by the author, sharing typical cases when conducting and implementing the translation process. At last, it conducts a thorough analysis and summary of this translation project, with the wish of sharing a complete process of a translation project. The report intends to intrigue some thinking of other translators in the aspects of translation preparation, implementation of the translation work, dealing with some difficulties and other aspects of the translation. To achieve an audience-centered translation, skopostheories is used as a theriotical framework in this thesis. Besides, literal translation and free translation are also applied as translation methods.The translation project report covers three phases in the course of the project: pre-translation, translation and post-translation. This paper selects many cases with typical Chinese culture cases to analyze. It is hoped that this report offers some valuable experiences as reference material when translating TV series subtitles.
