| The translation of popular science works(TOPS) is an important part in the fourth wave of translating activities(dominated by translation of foreign language into Chinese) in China. TOPS possess their own characteristics:scientific, literary,interesting and popular, each of which can bring about traps and obstacles for the translators. The paper analyses these difficulties in detail and calls for that attention should be paid for theoretical research on TOPS, so as to obtain achievement that matches the translation practice while the TOPS is thriving.This report is based on the English-Chinese translation of the chapter 5 of the Future of the Mind. It consists of five parts. Firstly, the paper introduces the translation task in a whole, including its background and significance of the practical and academic research. Secondly, the paper illustrates the characteristics of popular science text. With the guidance of Peter Newmark’s communicative translation, the writer introduces three translation principles of informative texts: purpose, accuracy and readability. Thirdly, the paper introduces the specific translation process of the translation task with the help of computer aided translation SDL Trados, including preparations, translating process and revising of target text. The fourth part, the core part of this report, analyzes the translation strategies in details from representative cases of the chapter 5 of the Future of the Mind. In the last part, the author draws a conclusion that we should pay attention to some key points of popular science text and shares the experience gained and inspiration required in the practice. |
