A Report On The Translation Of Basics Of Translation Studies(chapters 3, 4 & 5)

This is an English-Chinese translation report of chapter 3, chapter 4 and chapter 5 excerpted from Basics of Translation Studies. Some descriptions and analyses in this book are based on Cay Dollerup’s own practice aiming at providing guidance for the translation.The third chapter is “Modes of Translation in the Modern World”, which dwells on consecutive interpreting, simultaneous interpreting, “gist” translation, “spot” translation, “sight” translation, dubbing, subtitling, surtitling and so on. Then it gives a description of developments and characters of those modes. The fourth chapter is “The Individual Translator: the Myth of the ‘Perfect translation’”. This chapter discusses the questions of “omniscient translator” and the “perfect translation”. And debates of these issues have been based on translation of religious and elitist texts. The fifth chapter is “The History of Translation”, which describes the original and the development of interpreting and translation, and then it gives a description on the forces behind translation and the history of European translation. The author points that the history of western translation activity is subdivided into different periods, and gives a detailed description on those periods.The source text is characterized by a lot of terminologies and sophisticated constructions. Therefore many difficulties are encountered during this translation process. So under the guidance of Functional Equivalence and Skopos theory, the author employs conversion, addition, omission, negation and other translation strategies to solve the problems in this translation practice, and eventually achieve the fluency of translation. This translation process makes the author realize the importance of improving the bilingual ability and only by constantly learning can the translator make a great progress.
