This thesis is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text, chapter 1 “Introductory Remarks” and chapter 2 “the Problem of Western Centrality in Translation Studies” is excerpted from Basics of Translation Studies written by Cay Dollerup. In the first chapter, Cay Dollerup describes the preliminary model of translation in detail. Then combining some of the characteristics of translation studies, he describes this model as follows: Encoding-Decoding-Mediation-Encoding-Decoding. Cay Dollerup’s descriptions of this model are not redundant, in fact, the communicative translation theory based on the concept of information almost runs through the whole discussion. The second chapter moves on to a discussion of language families, and lists the main groups within the Indo-European language family, which includes a discussion of the “core” words of Indo-European.This source text is an informative text. Taking the text typology into account, the author analyzes the source text from vocabulary, sentence and discourse levels under the guidance of Nida’s functional equivalence. The translation methods applied to this translation practice are amplification, omission, literal and free translation.Through this translation practice, the author learns that translation is not the replacement of one word for another but involves juggling the vocabularies, syntax, and concepts of two linguistic and cultural systems. In addition, the author holds that Eugene Nida’s functional equivalence is of great importance in guiding English-Chinese practice. Meanwhile, the author also realizes that a translator needs perseverant efforts in learning and practicing in order to strive for a perfect translation.
