A Report On The Translation Of The Outbreak Of The First World War: Structure, Politics And Decision-making

This is a translation report on The Outbreak of the First World War: Structure, Politics, and Decision-Making which is compiled by Professor Jack S. Levy and Professor John A. Vasquez. The translator is in charge of the translation of Chapter 2 and Chapter 3. The book is completed by 10 scholars from fields of history, politics and international relations. Through interdisciplinary studies, they conduct a new discussion and analysis on the origins of the First World War. According to the translation theory and skills the translator has learned, she makes a conclusion of the whole translation process and the translation strategies which have been used.This report can be divided into three parts. The Introduction introduces the background information of this book and its significance to the public. The main body consists of three chapters. Chapter One is task description which illustrates the goals of the translation and the translator’s arrangement. Chapter Two is process description which consists of 3 phases including: pre-translation preparation, execution and polishing work. In this part, the translator lists the focuses and execution result of each stage. Chapter Three is case analysis of translation. The translator lists the difficulties met in the translation process through specific analysis to certain sentences, which demonstrates the reflection to the translation process. In this section, the translator mainly discusses the translation strategy for politics and history works. The last part is conclusion. The translator reflects on the whole translation task and summarizes the lessons she has learned through this process.
