Since the beginning of the 20 th Century, the rapid development of the global climat e crisis, environmental crisis and ecological crisis make human beings begin to critici ze the foundation of modern civilization, and arouse a fierce debate, of which anthrop ocentrism is the focus. David Pepper, claiming to be a Marxist, is a distinctive represe ntative of anthropocentrism for his idea with a strong color of the Marxism. The oppo sing party put forward all kinds of non-anthropocentrism, such as techno-centrism and eco-centrism, both of which have been strongly criticized by Pepper. However, in the end, whether Pepper is a real Marxist or not. And, is the Marxism really an anthropoc entrism? Facing the serious ecological crisis, how can China make developments for t he future? Prompted by these questions, this paper takes anthropocentrism as the critic al clue, making a systematic research on Pepper’s theoryFrom the perspective of the history of anthropocentrism, the first chapter makes an analysis of the potential form at ancient times and its establishment progress in moder n times and the 20 th century originated from the tradition of humanism, as well as the influence of various arguments and ecological crisis in 20 th Century. Moreover, it ana lyzes the process of Pepper’s anthropocentrism road under the great background, and t he following basic points in his anthropocentrism: view of nature, view of society(pol itical appeal), and the understanding on human subjectivity and priority. It discusses t he reasons why the Marxism has some influence on his thought.Based on Pepper’s criticism towards techno-centrism and eco-centrism, the second chapter further investigates the pros and cons of his anthropocentrism. This chapter de epens our understanding of the essence of technological optimism and ecological rom anticism, which is good for us to correct the deviation on some common theoretical u nderstandings. From the perspective of Marxist philosophy, the third chapter analyzes the enlighte nment of Pepper’s humanism to us, as well as the limitation of Pepper’s thought. And on this basis, it discusses the relationship between Marxism and anthropocentrism. As for the ideological enlightenment, Pepper’s profound analysis of the root of the ecolo gical crisis makes us vigilant against the western environmental protection, while the "appropriate development" thought is a significant reference in dealing with the relati onship between economic growth and environmental protection during the progress of our domestic development.Of course, through the systematic analysis, this paper holds that Pepper still has so me distance from a real Marxist for that he does not recognize the proletariat revolutio n and still has great confidence in the development of capitalism. From the perspectiv es of practical men, practical nature and the dialectical relation between them, Marxis m can not be simply regarded as the abstract anthropocentrism.
