A Study On David Pepper's Ecological Marxism

David Pepper is the representative figure of ecological Marxism,his ecological originality lies in the use of the analysis method of the Marxism,put forward insights on how to solve the ecological problems.In the face of increasingly serious global ecological crisis,he believes that the capitalist system and the capitalist mode of production is the root cause of ecological crisis.Pepper had a profound criticism on capitalism by stand in the position of ecological,and points out that only reform the capitalist system,realize the harmonious development of man and nature,in order to fundamentally solve the ecological problems.Based on the analysis of the root of ecological crisis,Pepper depicts the ideal blueprint of the future society and put forward appropriate development,social justice,sustainable consumption concept.Pepper's theory has some limitations,but we can't deny that some of his views have great inspiration to current stage of China's construction of socialist ecological civilization.This paper mainly discusses the following three aspects:The first part mainly analyses the historical background and theoretical premise of Pepper's ecological Marxism.When the environmental problems from the local environmental pollution spread gradually become the global ecological crisis,people finally began to wake up,realize that under capitalism is impossible to fundamentally solve the ecological problems,and try to explore the ecological socialism.The drastic changes in Soviet Union and Eastern Europe and the "Earth Summit" in 1992 has brought great touches to Pepper,led to a complete shift in his academic research.Pepper's ecological Marxism absorb Marx's ecological thought,and learn from and inherit the theoretical content and critical spirit of Frankfurt school.The second part mainly expounds the quintessence of Pepper's ecological Marxism.First,from the four aspects of the ecological implication of historical materialism,the correct understanding of societynature dialectics,return to anthropocentrism and the critique of ecological Utopia,analyses the Marxism in Pepper's view.Second,from the four aspects of the capitalist system is the source of ecological crisis,the capitalist mode of production caused alienated consumption,cost externalities led to ecological imperialism and capitalism led to the absence of environmental justice,analyses Pepper how to reveal the root of ecological crisis by using Marxism viewpoint.Third,from the three aspects of economic life,political life,consumption concept,describes the beautiful blueprint for the future society's planning by Pepper.The third part mainly discusses the enlightenment to the construction of ecological civilization in China,which is based on the value and limitations of Pepper's ecological Marxism.The current stage of our country in the process of building an ecological civilization,we must to play a key role in government management,maintain social equity,promote ecological justice,establish the correct values,against the alienation of consumption,and also resist on ecological imperialism,wary of the transfer of ecological crisis.
