Project Report On 2014 EASC International Symposium Paper Translation

The source text of the translation project, an academic paper with the title of "On the Challenges and Countermeasures of Cultural Exchanges Between Cross-border Ethnic Groups in Southwest China and Neighboring Countries Under the ASEAN 10+3 Cultural Cooperation Framework—Taking Cross-border Ethnic Groups in Yunnan Province as a Case", was written for the 2014 East Asian Studies Centre (EASC) International Symposium held in Thailand. The text is categorized as an informative text by Peter Newmark’s Text Category Translation Theory, which then is selected as the core translation theory for this report.The whole process of the academic paper translation project conducted by the translator has been comprehensively recorded in this report, including phases of "pre-translation analysis", "translation" and "post-translation proofreading". During these phases, the report has probed deep into the aspects like the text genre and style, linguistic features and target audience of the paper, determined the proper translation theory, strategies and tools, and at last, adopted systematic and feasible approaches of proofreading to ensure the translation quality. Moreover, in the chapter of "Case Study", the report has listed four typical cases, namely "academic paper format", "politically sensitive words", "technical terms with ethnic characteristics" and "citations", on each case of which independent reflection and targeted solutions have been made, serving as reference for other translators.This project report has summarized valuable experience of the academic paper translation and it has decided the essential point of the translation: the "authenticity" of information, the accurate transmission of the original message. It is sincerely hoped that the achievements of this translation project report could be a reliable reference for other translators who are working on the translation of the same type.
