| This paper explores the translation approaches of the academic paper from the lexical level, the syntactic level and the textual level from the perspective of text typology proposed by Katharina Reiss. The study is based on the translation practice of academic papers taken from Corpus-based Approaches to Contrastive Linguistics and Translation Studies,a book of collected papers in corpus linguistics.Katharina Reiss proposed that the type of text is the primary factor influencing the translator’s choice of a proper translation method. It is assumed that academic paper is a kind of typical informative text.In accordance with the features of the informative texts and the corresponding translation approaches, the translator should focus on the content of the source text and the form of the target text to ensure the information of source text and the textual function of the target text are correctly conveyed.Consequently,on account of the theory and the translation practice, the paper concludes that when translating academic papers: the meaning of the term should be correctly transferred and the translation of the same term should be unified;the translation of long sentences should focus on making the stylistic English source text featuring nominalization more dynamic by changing some nouns or nominal structures into verbs or verbal structures;regarding the translation of cohesion, approaches of adding explanation and omission of some functional words should be employed. This paper consists of four parts. The first part is the brief introduction to the background of this translation project;the second part is the introduction to the theory of text typology, the characteristics of academic papers and translation strategies;the third part is the translation report including analysis of academic papers and corresponding translation methods from three levels: the lexical level, the syntactic level and the textual level. The last part is the conclusion of this study. This paper concludes that Katharina Reiss’ s theory of text typology is of great significance to the translation of academic papers. The findings of the study are the text type of the source text should be taken into account to choose appropriate translation strategies in non-literal translation practice. |
