On the background of globalization, English has become a useful tool of communication for people with different cultural backgrounds. English also plays an important role of medium in the definitions of words in elementary TCSL books. In these books, the English definitions in the vocabulary list is indispensable. A Course of Chinese(written by Yang Ji-zhou, published by Beijing Language University, 2006), a well-recognized series of teaching materials, has been widely used throughout the years. The English definitions of the words in this course are detailed and complete but there exists such problems as incorrect definitions and improper methods of defining. By careful investigations and detailed analyses, this thesis is written to figure out the above problems on the basis of A Course of Chinese(elementary), and hopefully to find out possible methods of word defining in English in elementary TCSL and further to put them into practice in defining words of different parts of speech in bilingual languages. The defining rules and strategies are made concerning its influence upon foreign students in word study. This thesis also tests the feasibility of the word defining trategies by conducting the questionnaire survey among foreign students.This thesis is aimed to help the editors of the TCSL textbooks transform strategies for the problems of gloss, to improve the qualities of textbooks, which will satisfy the requirement of discipline construction and Chinese promotion in new era.This essay is divided into six chapters:ChapterⅠis the introduction of the research which mainly introduces the reason and significance, research background, selection basis, object and range, theoretical basis, methodologies and sources of the data.ChapterⅡ is the introduction of the nine methods of word defining in A Course of Chinese(elementary) and the adoption of six more methods of word defining as a supplement to the Course.Chapter Ⅲ is an attempt to make four defining rules and strategies on the basis of the investigations and analyses of the Course in reference to previous researches.Chapter Ⅳ is a research on defining words of different parts of speech in bilingual languages.Chapter Ⅴ is a test of the feasibility and validity of the word defining rules and strategies by the questionnaire survey among foreign students.Chapter Ⅵ is a conclusion of the research and some points of improvement.
