The Chinese vocabulary teaching begins with the learning of the newwords on textbooks. The quality of the translation of the new words has a greatinfluence on the acquiring vocabulary for the English-speaking students. This essayfixes its attention upon the translation of the words in“HANYU JIAOCHENG”(Vol.1&2) and “Short-term spoken Chinese”(Threshold Vol.1&2,Elementary)to get ageneral understanding of the elementary Chinese textbooks. Through the analysis ofthe translation, several problems in the textbooks are discovered: the Englishtranslation and the meaning of the word in text have distance; lacking necessarylimitations on the meaning and the usage of the words; the translation of the measurewords and function words is incomplete.The paper explores the causes from the standard of the choosing of the words,the comparison of Chinese-English vocabulary,intercultural communication. Finally,using contrastive linguistics findings in combination with the students’ vocabularyerrors, the author makes some suggestions on the translation of the new words on thetextbooks.
