The analysis and summary in this translation report are based on the maintenance and installation of the preliminary users of the Level Crossing Obstacle Detection System(LCODS).This maintenance and installation manual consists six chapters of introduction, general description, system components, installations, configuration and usage and maintenance. In addition, it explains the basic concepts of radar in appendix one. The Level Crossing Obstacle Detection System(LCODS) is a system designed to detect obstacles in level crossing areas along rails using radar technology. LCODS’ main goal is to prevent the risk of impact between trains and objects trapped in the gates, such as vehicles or other obstacles with similar size. LCODS is capable of detecting an obstacle independently from object composition(metal, wood, cement, etc.), and under a wide range of weather conditions such as fog and heavy rain. This article belongs to scientific writing; it is a kind of application writing which is concise, standard, accurate and rigorous. We can get a clear picture of this manual by mastering its well organized structures and objective descriptions. The requirement for literary translation is stricter than that translation of practical writing. Conveying a message in a clear and precise way is the basic function for practical writing, it achieves the communicative purpose “most practical”, but the communication of aesthetic feeling of the language itself plays second fiddle. Under the guideline of Eugene A. Nida’s functional equivalence theory, I solve the problem during the translation.
