This translation research report is based on the translation of From Expert Student to Novice Professional, which is wrote by professor Anna Reid, Madeleine Abrandt Dahlgren, Lars Owe Dahlgren and Peter Petocz, and published by Sprigerlink in 2011.As an educational academic writing, From Expert Student to Novice Professional discusses how students understand high education, to develop engagement in learning and professional identity under the background of knowledge economy and globalization, which is of great technicality and practical significance. This translation project is under the guideline of Gideon Toury’s translation norm theory. Gideon Toury regards translation as a norm-governed activity, and the translator is governed by initial norms, preliminary norms and operational norms separately from the stage of choosing translated texts to the act of translation itself. To deal with difficulties in translation, this report discusses and analyzes how the translator is governed by academic writings’ translation norms from the prospect of lexical, syntactic and writing style features combined with the characteristics of academic writings. The major translation methods and skills used in this report consist of conventional method, annotation, word meaning extension, amplification and omission, conversion,changing order, affirmative and negative translation.This report consists of six parts: Part one is the research status of academic translation. Part two is the introduction of translation project and source text,including project background, significance, structure and source text’s background,content and characteristic analysis. Part three is the representation of translation process, including the preparation before translation, implementation, and alteration after translation. Part four is Gideon Toury’s translation norm theory and the analysis of translation norms in academic writings. Part five is about difficulties encountered in translation and methods adopted under the guideline of Gideon Toury’s translation norm theory. Part six is the summery of lessons, implications and unsolved problems in this translation.
