An Interpretation Report On The 23^th Harbin International Economic And Trade Fair

With the rapid development of China’s foreign economy and increasing chances of foreign exchange, escort interpreters are in great demand. Escort interpretation is playing core role in business communication. The author volunteered in China Harbin International Economic and Trade Fair(as Harbin Trade Fair) from June 15 to 19, 2013. Harbin Trade Fair is an international and large- scaled economic and trade exhibition. Customers, experts and businessmen from more than 80 countries and regions attends the fair and the total trade volume reaches more than billions of dollars. The author is mainly responsible for interpretation work for overseas stationery experts. There are six experts, three Indians, two Singaporeans and one Pakistani. Experts discusses talents exchange and stationery development with other experts in this field. The author’s task is to accompany the experts to attend Conferences-Negotiation on International Stationery Talent Exchange Cooperation Project and Talks on the Demand for Foreign Stationery Experts, also including sightseeing provided by organizer and solving problems in daily activities.At the request of the organizer, the author went to pick up experts at the airport and accompanied them to check in the hotel, realizing the importance of useful expressions at the same time. Therefore, the author summarizes some useful expressions of hotels, dining and Tour guiding involved in the process of escort interpreting. Meanwhile, the experts’ distinctive English pronunciations left the author a deep impression. As a result, the author summed up the pronouncing characteristics of India, Pakistan and Singapore. Because these experts were from different countries with various food cultures, religion cultures and folk cultures, the author mainly analyzed the barriers caused by these cultural differences, hoping to provide reference for the escort interpreters.After finishing the task, with the help of experts and teachers, the author has accumulated related data and knowledge by means of literature review, telephone interview, and field survey. The author emphatically analyzes the obstacles namely knowledge obstacle, culture obstacle and language obstacle, respectively, which the author met during the escort interpretation in Harbin Trade Fair. At last, based on the main principles of skopos theory, the author comes up with corresponding solutions which are amplification and omission, explanation, and vague language.This paper is a practice report of escort interpretation in Harbin Trade Fair. The author describes the feelings and experience during this practice, hoping to improve by summing up experience in the future study as well as to provide enlightenment for interpreters and arose the attention of teachers engaged in interpreting teaching, students who learn to interpret and those interpreters to escort interpretation.
