A Report On E-C Translation Of Angle Magazine(september 2014 Issue)

Nowadays, many foreign pharmaceutical companies move to China and magazines published by them are used to show their advantages. Translation of this kind of magazine can not only introduce new technologies and methods to China, but expand exchanges and cooperation in the medical sector between China and foreign countries.The translation task is an E-C translation of Angle magazine with content which introduces several pharmaceutical companies and interviews of outstanding staff. This report is composed of three parts: the introduction, the body and the conclusion. The introduction mainly covers the background and significance of this report. The body consists of three parts: task description, translation process and case analysis. Task description aims to conduct source text analysis and show requirements from the entrusting party. Before translation, during translation and after translation are three stages of translation process. Before translation is made up of finding background information, selecting translation tools and resources, choosing translation theory and strategies, making translation plan and glossary; during translation includes quality control and process description; after translation consists of proof reading and feedback from the client.Case analysis presents several typical translation problems and the relevant solutions. The conclusion covers summary of this report, the limitations and future expectation of the translator.On lexical level, words of the source text are not professional, but descriptive. On sentence level, there are long sentences in the source text, however, in Chinese, short sentences play a dominant role. Therefore,sentence structure differences between Chinese and English should be taken into consideration in translation process and some methods of amplification, omission and repetition etc. can be used to deal with this kind of translation problem. In order to make the target readers understand the target text in the greatest degree, domestication is chosen to be the dominant translation strategy. The translation methods and strategy chosen base on principles of Skopos theory. This theory argues that translation is an intentional behavior that takes place in a given situation and the end justifies the means, while magazine is a kind of applied texts whose main purpose is conveying information to obtain certain skopos. Therefore, Skopos theory can guide this translation task.This report reveals that translation is a purposeful behavior whose successful implementation bases on translation preparations to guarantee translation quality and procedure, requirements from the client to meet,the translation theory and strategy to solve translation problems, careful proof reading of the target text to correct some translation errors. It is hoped that this report can provide a reference to translators who participate in translation of this kind of magazine.
