Ethnicity and Race written by Stephen Cornell and Douglas Hartmann introduces the connections and differences between ethnicity and race from the aspect of sociology, especially for the differences of Nationalism and racism in America and other countries. The book elaborates two most influential topics in the world:ethnicity and race, which has appealed not only the attention of many American scholars but also that of Chinese readers.Ethnicity and Race is a non-literature informative text. The whole book has eight chapters made up of 311 pages, which is about 150,000 words. Chapter5, in which Case1 and Case5 are translated by the author, introduces the construction of ethnicity and race through a series of historical and contemporary case study. The theory adopted is functional equivalence, which includes two aspects: information equivalence and effect equivalence. In other words,in the process of translation, the translator shall reproduce original message of the source text in terms of meaning and style with the most faithful and natural language. The strategy adopted is a combination of semantic translation and communicative translation.The report consists of five parts: description of the translation material,preparation before the translation and the process in the translation, translation theory and strategies, difficult points and skills as well as summary of the translation practice.In the process of writing translation practice report, the translator select suitable translation strategy and skills according to specific conditions,and case analysis in terms of lexical level, sentence level, textual level and cultural level.The author translates the chosen chapter with learnt translation theory.
