On The Translation Of Complex Sentences

It has been over 10 years since the 2008 financial crisis swept the whole world.At this very moment,Ben S.Bernanke,former chairman of the Federal Reserve,Timothy F.Geithner,the seventy-fifth secretary of the Treasury and Henry M.Paulson,Jr.,the seventy-fourth secretary of the Treasury came together and delivered a new book,Firefighting: The Financial Crisis and Its Lessons.The book not only reflects on the lessons of the 2008 Great Recession,but also alerts the world to a future crisis.This report is based on the translation of the introduction,chapter one and chapter two of Firefighting: The Financial Crisis and Its Lessons.The book,as an English publication on financial theme,features a fluent and concise writing style,a strict logic,and a clear structure.Besides,there are a wealth of complex sentences and compound complex sentences,especially the ones with complex structures,and large amount of information,which cause barriers to the translator.Therefore,the translator pays extra attention to the complex sentences in the source text,and takes into consideration the linguistic features of English financial publications,as well as the standards of financial translation.On the basis of accurately understanding the source text and the differences between Chinese and English,the translator applies the theory of Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation,trying to explore the translation strategies of the complex sentence.Translation of complex sentences has long been a challenge in English-Chinese translation.Guided by Newmark's semantic translation and communicative translation,and grounded in the linguistic features of English financial publications,this report tries to discuss and summarize the translation strategies in addressing complex sentences in four respects: following the original order,adjusting,reorganizing the sentence structure and turning the explicit cohesion into the implicit coherence,in the hope of contributing to the translation of complex sentences in similar texts.
