A Report On The Translation Of Complex Sentences In Political Documents:A Case Study Of The Translation Of The Obama Doctrine(Excerpts)

Communicative translation is an important part of English translator Newmark's translation theories.In order to make target readers understand the meaning,it usually makes information transfer for readers.Nowadays,people all over the world are getting more and more communications in the cultural,political,and daily life.As an important means of communication,translation is playing a crucial role especially in the application.Therefore,the research is of great significance.In this paper,the guidance of communicative translation approach on the complex sentences is mainly discussed.The material is an interview of Obama by Jeffrey Goldberg of the Atlantic,who writes the cover story in this month's magazine and focuses on President Obama's foreign policy.As English complex sentences appear frequently,the translation of these complex sentences becomes one of the most difficult parts during translating the text.The report reflects the whole translation process of The Obama Doctrine(Excerpts),which aims to make the target text(TT)acceptable and comprehensible for target readers.Basing on the purpose,the author believes that the communicative translation approach is more effective to express both the emotion and information of the source text(ST),for it can freely express the author's ideas without following the form of the ST.The thesis is divided into four parts,namely,task description,process description,case analysis,implication and conclusion.The first two parts give introduction on the chosen article,task preparation and translation process.Then,the author introduces theoretical foundation and after analyzing the text,there are some strategies of translating complex sentences.And the author makes discussions on the application of communicative translation approach.In case analysis,the author uses methods like free translation,division and reconstruction as well as addition and omission.In dealing with sentences with dash,the author chooses to adjust words order for adapting to the habitual form of the TT.Finally,there are implication and conclusion about the translation task.
