On The Translation Skills Of Chinese Paratactic Sentences In Light Of English And Chinese Sentence Differences

There are many paratactic sentences in Chinese. New Modern Folklore written by Yuan Wenhai combines “folklore” with “modern”, and make folklore close to the present era and full with ages breathing. This book makes a penetrating analysis and has fluent language of its own. The Chapter Seven of this book has 16,174 Chinese characters and 198 sentences, of which there are 45 paratactic sentences, at 23 percent. The whole chapter uses many paratactic sentences, which have the following features: there is no conjunctive word and various cohesive devices between clauses, and topics are intertwined within a sentence.Chinese Paratactic sentence is typical. Chinese sentences often use it to make sentences flow, pursuing the flowing rhythm, while English sentences are restricted by lots of rules. Due to the English and Chinese sentence differences: Chinese sentences are streamlines and their syntactic units are open; English sentences are spacial and their syntactic units are closed, it is not easy to translate Chinese paratactic sentences.Combined with the translation examples of Chinese paratactic sentences in the Chapter Seven of New Modern Folklore and based on the English and Chinese sentence differences, the thesis will study the translation of Chinese paratactic sentences. In order to convert Chinese sentences to English sentences and make the translation smooth, the thesis puts forward the translation skills of consolidation method, disconnection method, reorganization method, linear translation method and insertion method to deal with the Chinese paratactic sentences translation. When translating the Chinese paratactic sentences, the translator should first recognize the implied logical semantic relation, distinguish the deep structure level, then choose the appropriate translation skill according to the English sentence features, to make the translation conform to the habit of English readers.
