A Study On Fang Hui’s Wenxuanyanbaoxieshiping

Wen Xuan Yan Bao Xie Shi Ping is an important book of Fang Hui on the ancient poetics.Compared to the Tang Dynasty, the study of Wen Xuan declined in the Song Dynasty.Selecting the poems of Wen Xuan is not only for spreading the poems, but also for correcting the drawbacks of the poetic circles of the late Song Dynasty.The poets in the late Song Dynasty were learning from the poets in the late Tang Dynasty,and the poetry style was lower, and the poets were not good at writing pre-tang poetry.Yan, Bao and Xie were at the transitional phase between the pre-tang poetry and the modern style poetry.Fang Hui selecting and commenting the ancient poems of Wen Xuan was not only to set a aesthetic paradigm of a poem——Jian An Style,but also to establish the connection of the poetry in periods.Fang Hui was good at using a critical methods which is called Writer-Centered Theory.It embodied the importance of the moral quality of the poets.Besides, Fang Hui payed attention to the methodicalness, the themes, the words and expressions of poets.Fang Hui commented the poets based on the literary value.It stimulated the development of the study on Wen Xuan.The biggest feature of this book is that the poems were compared with Jian An Poems.Fang Hui spoke highly of the poems which were like the Jian An style.Fang Hui thought highly of the simple and unsophisticated side of Jian An Poems. It required that the words should be nature, and there should be more emotion expression than scenery description.But it was unreasonable to confuse the emotion and the metaphysics.Wen Xuan Yan Bao Xie Shi Ping is also the first book of Wenxuan’s criticism.Fang Hui quoted Li Shan’s annotations to interpret the histories, to pronounce, to explain the words and the verses, to introduce the people names and the geographical names.Fang Hui affirmed the value of the Li Shan’s annotations and corrected the errors of Li Shan’s annotations.What’s more important is that this book inspired the criticism of Wen Xuan of the Ming Dynasty and the Qing Dynasty.
