A Report On The Translation Of The Chinese In Britain1800-Present—Economy,Transnationalism,Identity

This translation report is based on the translation of the sixth, the seventh and the eighth chapters of the book entitled The Chinese in Britain 1800-Present—Economy,Transnationalism, Identity from English to Chinese. It describes the procedures of translation, the translation theories which have been adopted and a detailed analysis of typical cases will be expounded in this report.This report consists of five chapters. In Chapter One, the translator provides a basic introduction to the translation task, including the outline of the book, the book’s authors’ profiles, the analysis of the style feature and the significance of this translation task. In Chapter Two, the procedures in the translation process are given a detailed description ranging from the early preparation, the translation process to the proofreading. Chapter Three is the analysis of typical cases with the aid of systemic functional grammar and other relevant approaches of translation from both global perspective and local prospective. To be specific, in the global perspective, the translator applies Skopos theory into analysis and makes use of domestication in the translation. And in local perspective, words and phrases are dealt with under the guidance of Catford’s translation shift theory and discourses are dealt with from the perspective of cohesion theory provided by Halliday & Hassan. The fourth chapter is the case studies with the utilization of the theories above. The last chapter summarizes the whole report, where the translator shares some of her perplexities about the understanding of the original text and summarizes the translation experience which can be useful for future translation practice. Through the translation task, the translator not only has become more familiar about the source text but also has acquired a better command of relevant theories, which, hopefully, can be of great use to her future translation tasks.
