This is a report on the translation of Interview with Stuart Hall, an interview introducing Stuart Hall‘s ideas about The Neoliberal Revolution and cultural studies, which refers to the issues that catch the world attentions. Some problems encountered in the translation process are as follows: 1. there are a lot of terms about politics, economy and culture in the source text, such as Neoliberalism, the Neoliberal Revolution, Classical Liberalism etc., which involves rich background knowledge; 2. some English words don‘t have their Chinese equivalents, so it is difficult to grasp and accurately understand their meanings; 3. some pronouns can indicate several words, and it is easy for the translator to make mistakes; 4. this text contains a large number of complicated and long sentences, which are hard to understand and critical for cohesion, coherence and readability of the target text. In order to meet these challenges, full preparation, industriousness and carefulness are needed. Also, the guidance of a proper theory is of importance. Therefore theory semantic translation and communicative translation by Peter Newmark are applied for the translation to help the translator get a better target text and summarize translation experience. What‘s more, the translator adopts some translation techniques to overcome the above difficulties. For example, As to the names and terms, the translator can adopt the method of transliteration plus annotation or provide additional contextual details to glossary terms; in order to deal with complicated and long sentences, the translator can apply the logical thinking method to the text, and take advantage of the strategies such as sequential translation, reverse translation, split translation, and word transference of sentence structure, etc. In a word, the translator must take great efforts to figure out the real meaning, point out the essence of the source text and draw experience from the translation process.
