At present, the domestic translation study of American ethnic literature focuses more on Chinese-American literature and African-Literature, seldom involves Caribbean-American literature. Across Cultures: A Reader for Writers(Third Edition) is an English collection co-edited by Sheena Gillespie and Robert Singleton. This collection consists of about one hundred works written by different writers of different backgrounds. The style of these articles includes novels, essays and fables, etc. There are five Caribbean-American works in this collection, which reveals the present survival condition of Caribbean-Americans from different aspects. By comparing and analyzing the content of the five works, the translator intends to choose three of them to do a translation practice with the guidance of Peter Newmark’s semantic translation theory. Through the practice, the transalator hopes to have more people know the culture and custom of Caribbean-Americans.The report contains four chapters. In Chapter One, the translator will briefly introduce the background information, the purpose, the content and the significance of this translation project. Chapter Two is about the stylistic features of essay and the reasons why the translator chooses semantic translation as the main translation theory used in this practice. Chapter Three is the body of the report, in this part, the translator will analyze how to translate words, long sentences, loan words and culture images under the guidance of semantic translation. Chapter Four is the summary of the project, including the translator’s gains and the deficiency of the project.
