The Discussion On Humanism In Production From Bauhaus

This paper takes the word ‘Bauhaus’ as chronology and starts with its original meaning, which is invented by Gropius. The word ‘Bauhaus’ is combined with German word ‘Bauen’ and ‘Haus’, which both refers to the ‘building’ or ‘house’. It contains two kinds of meaning. On one hand it suggests ‘Freemasonry’, a guild that formed by architects and mansions. On the other hand it is a symbol of new artisticconcept that is the combination of art and technology. The original meaning of this word reveals a scenethat artists and craftsmen work together and create a new building that serves the masses. So Gropius emphasis the point that artists and craftsmenshould work together in his Bauhaus Manifesto’.The basic idea of Bauhaus that mentioned above is the embodiment of humanism. Although humanism has different forms in various fields, the pursuit of happiness and dignity of mankind, the seeking of human’s authentic value, the studying of freedom and standard for humanity, and finally, the exploration and development of internal world.This idea originated in the Renaissance, when the emerging bourgeoisie pursuit of humanity liberation and freedom. That’s in the period of Enlightenment was applied to the field of social science. In modern western academic it is circles by Husserl’s phenomenology and carried forward by Heidegger’s Existentialist philosophy.‘Bauhaus Manifesto’ mainly elaborate two principles for Bauhaus, which are new approaches to learning and statement on artisticconcept. Bauhaus start a new artistic learning pattern and design vision that is totally different from classical art era. It emphasizesthe combination of art and technology. The design should serve the masses and produce comfortable living space. So it actually describe a utopian social model and ideal social practicing place that stress the equality. The manifesto was breached in the design practicing and learning activities. In Bauhaus the skills of design are available to study. The usual teaching is conducted between the master and apprentice, and they focus on how modern art can be apply to designing practicing. During this period, many celebrated masters produced a great deal of classic works, such as the School building of Bauhaus by Gropius, the rebuilding of Jena city’s cinema, the movie art by Moholy Nagy, the Vasily Chair by Marcel Lajos Breuer, the school building by Hannes Meyer and workshop team of Bauhaus. All these classic works are so eminent.All these classic works by Bauhaus indicates its opposition to classical art. It always pursuits the combination of industry and art. The value and potential of human should be the foundation of development on science and technology. It regards the human spiritual and material needs as the destination of design and manufacture. That’s the essence of humanism. The artists from Bauhaus thinks about the combination of science and culture, and the way that artisans and artists with rich experience can explore the human value realization and perfect personality, and finally, the realization of human potential and value in constant exploration.For Bauhaus, the purpose of design should be the people but not just the products. It should be the pursuit of happiness and dignity but not just the technology It should be the thinking of humanism but not just the cash. Since the concept of designing for people is put forward, the modern designing movement was started. Bauhaus holds the idea that design should serve the people and create a comfortable living space so that everyone can have a better life. That can conclude as a kind of socialist ideology or humanism ideology.
