| This is a translation report for the articles with the theme of “Mind and Brain” of Discover magazine. The twelve popular science articles from the magazine concern relevant scientific findings and inventions. With the rapid development of science, technology and society, it is necessary for people to acquire certain scientific knowledge through reading popular science articles so as to develop and keep harmonious relationships with nature and society. At present, some popular science magazines in China are in a dilemma due to their disadvantages in editing, and it is helpful for them to look for ways from foreign magazines to get through it. In addition, the translation strategies and methods of popular science texts should be further explored according to their own features and functions.This report makes a primary study of the translation strategies and the methods of popular science articles with the help of the various theories, including Reiss’ s classifications of text type, Nida’s functional equivalence and J.C. Catford’s shift theory, etc. The main body of this translation report is divided into four chapters. Chapter one is the task description, consisting of the background infor mation of the task, the analysis of the source text, including the main contents, features, text type of the source text and the corresponding translation strategies. In the second chapter, process description is presented in three aspects that are the preparation before translation, translation procedure and post-translation matters. The third chapter is case study, discussing translation difficulties, relevant theories and countermeasures. The fourth chapter points out insufficiency, related thinking and the overall summary about this translation report. |
