This paper stands as a translation report on China and the Shaping of Indonesia,1949-1965: a brilliant historical masterpiece written by Liu Hong, professor of Nanyang Technological University. This book explores presentations, constructions, and implications of the discourses about China and Indonesian during 1949 and 1965,a critical period of cultural and social transition for both China and Indonesia, and their relationship. The third part of the book mainly elaborates important ideological changes of the then president Sukarno and the famous writer of Indonesia Pramoedya after they got access to China and visited China. When translating the Third Part, the present translator and the author of this paper, guided by Catford’s shifts theory,Skopos theory, and functional equivalence, analyzes the target text by two levels, the word translation and sentence translation, which are further mirrored in this report. In the word translation level, the present translator gives examples and further analysis from two different perspectives; in the sentence translation level, the translator gives examples and further analysis from three different perspectives. This report falls into five chapters, with brief introduction to the translation task in Chapter One. Chapter two introduces the translating process. In the discussions of Chapter Three, the focus shifts to the three guiding translation theories. Chapter Four as the most important part of the report gives examples and analysis of the source text(ST)and target text(TT). Translation experience gained from this endeavor is crystallized in the conclusion and lessons and reflections in the translation practice are covered.
