In December 1978, the Third Plenary Session of the 11th Central Committee of the CPC marked that China had started the course of a comprehensive reform and opening-up. In the past 40 years, all fields of our country have produced leaps of progress. With the development of social economy, people’s demand of spiritual civilization is getting higher and higher. Social music education, as a significant part of music education, has obtained considerable progress. As the important way to achive the goal of life-long education, scholars did a lots of research of the social music education, but still had no symbolic work that been published yet.This paper analyzes the situation of social music education in Shijiazhuang city through literatures, questionnaire survey, observation method and case study method. In this study, I choose Qinchuan Art School-the biggest private social music institute in Shijiazhuang city as an individual case to make a research, pointing out some problems of Shijiazhuang’s social music situation. According to those problems, there are some practical advices have been listed in this thesis.There are four parts in this paper. Part one is the brief ntroduction. This part introduces the current situation of the research in China and abroad in social music education field, and makes a brief explanation of this writing’s strutures, ideas and research methods. The second part is an overview of social music education. In this part, I have analyzed and compared the concepts of social music education and community music education, summaried the value of social music education and its development motivation. The third part of this thesis is the introduction of social music education in Shijiazhuang city including the background of this city’s social music education and some questionnaire reports for Shijiazhuang Qinchuan Art School. Part four is the individual case survey of Qinchuan Art School. This survey covers the school distrabution, curriculum setting, teaching material’s using, faculty level, activity design, source of students and teachers. The last part is induction of the problems of social music education, and gives suggestions. This part concludes the current problems from conception and policy guidance sides, and has made some practical improvement plans for Shijiazhuang social music education.
