Since China’s reform and opening up, China’s economy keeps developing and growing stronger. Our exchanges and cooperation with the international community is becoming more and more frequent. And translation is the bridge linking up China and the world, as well as the premise of international exchanges and cooperation. Compared with that of literary translation, the proportion of non-literary translation in modern translation market is larger. However, people’s understanding of its important status is still to be deepened. Non-literary translation involves different types of writing with various characteristics and the translation of them has generality and specificity. Translators need to study the features of the type of writing to be translated in specific translation practices and adopt corresponding strategies according to its features. In this thesis the author discusses the common characteristics and strategies of non-literary translation and selects two representative non-literary translation practices——syllabus translation and business contract translation as cases. Firstly the author analyses the language features of these two types of writing, and then discusses the problems met in the translation process and the adopted solving strategies with examples in them. I hope this study can give some examples to non-literary translation practice and be of certain reference value to the researches on characteristics and strategies of non-literary translation.
