A Report Of Escort Interpretation For North Carolina State University Students’ Cultural Investagation In Harbin

This interpreting practical report is written based on the escort interpreting for North Carolina University Students’ traveling and cultural investigation of Harbin during June 13 th to June 23 rd in 2015. In the process, besides escort interpreting, the writer also assists the local tour guide to deal with relevant matters and follows the group to handle all the work covering clothing, food, shelter and traveling. From this project, I deeply know all those difficulties and hardships when I do as an interpreter and the requirements for the job on both physically and mentally. According to the integration and classification after the project, the writer sums up experience as well as reviews about shortcomings, with better realization and understanding of interpretation, and I hope that thesis would be beneficial to my future study, research of interpretation and can be a guide in the practical uses in future.The paper includes four chapters. The first chapter is “Task Description” of interpreting practice, in which the writer makes a brief introduction of the consigner, requirements and features of the project. The second chapter is “Process Description” of interpreting practice, in which the writer describes the process in three stages, by the order of interpreting preparation, interpreting process and interpreting evaluation. The third chapter of “Case Analysis” of interpreting practice is the most important part in this paper. In this chapter, the writer analyzes the problems and difficulties in the real interpreting practice, and classifies the work of an interpreter into three categories: interpretation with respect of different tourist spot materials, negotiation and mediation about cultural matters and assistance and management of living or other emergencies. The writer exemplifies the work, problems and strategies in details for all three categories. In the last chapter, the writer clarifies the meaning of the awareness of inter-cultural communication for an interpreter, points out the qualities for an excellent interpreter and proposes the inspiration and expectation for the study and work in future.
