Identity Roles Of Interpreters In Liaison-Escort Interpreting

The cooperation and communication between China and the rest of the world are much more frequent than ever,hence great demand for liaison-escort interpreters However,differences in languages and cultural backgrounds have brought difficulties to international communications.Liaison-escort interpreters cannot be "invisible" all the time through interpreting.It is often the case that liaison-escort interpreters encounter various and unexpected situations that require them to assume different roles accordingly to ensure the success of foreign events.In the meantime,liaison-escort interpreters need some criteria to guide themselves when and how to play the right role in the process of field interpreting.Based on the interpreter's personal interpreting experiences for the International Life Science Forum of Jinan Sister Cities involved in the 3rd Conference of International City Alliance of Springs Cultural Landscape,this report analyzes and discusses the identity roles of interpreters in liaison-escort interpreting in the perspective of Chesterman's(2001)models of translation ethics.It first introduces the objectives of the report and describes the background information about the interpreting task,the clients of the interpreting task,the pre-task preparation and the proceeding with the task.Then,it reviews Chesterman's(2001)models of translation ethics and the applications of the five models in translation and interpreting studies.By analyzing the interpreter's actual experiences,this report identifies and discusses the identity roles the interpreter played in the interpreting task from the perspective of the five models.Examples of predicaments encountered by the interpreter and how they are dealt with are analyzed by taking the models into consideration.This report finally presents the clients'feedback and self-reflections and summarizes the six roles frequently adopted by the interpreter in the task.
