A Comparative Study Of The Narrative Structure Of Novels And Movies In The Multidimensional Perspective

As two different forms of art, the novel and the movie have different characteristics of narrative structure. The novel narrative and the movie narrative have a common narrative theory background. With a large number of novels have been adapted into movies, the comparative study of the novel narrative and the movie narrative has received more and more attention. In this paper, the narrative structure of the novel and the movie as the research object, using the theory of narrative, from three dimensions of the relationship of word and image, time and space, the material means,to compare the novel and the movie.Firstly, starting from the media used in the novel and the movie, the text and the image are analyzed and compared, in order to clarify their relationship and their respective characteristics. Due to the influence of different media, the novel and the movie have different characteristics of structural elements and the combination of elements, in the characters, events, circumstances and so on.Secondly, form time and space of the novel and the movie, this paper has detailed the difference between the time and space in the way of existence and external embodiment. The novel is to show the space through the time, while the movie is embodied the time by the space. The movie also limited by showing time and space, but the novel is not restricted by this. All of this makes the narrative structure of novels and movies with a larger difference, in social life, organization characters, plot, etc.In the end, form the aspect of the material means, the influence of the material conditions on the narrative structure of novels and movies are discussed. The movie is subject to a lot of material conditions, and thus has a distinct material; compared with it, the spiritual nature of the novel is more prominent. Due to the differences of material means, the novels and movies have their own characteristics in the aspects of the narrative elements and their structure, such as the scene, the characters, and the space and time arrangement.The comparative study of novels and movies has a long time. The research object is mainly focused on the narrative discourse. This paper makes a comparative study of the novels and movies form three aspects, the relationship between word and image, time and space, the material, by analyzing the text of the novel and the movie adaptation of the novel, to reveal the narrative structure of the novel and the movie.
