Solfeggio is a fundamental and compulsory subject in music education. As the most important and basic content in sightsinging, its main purpose is to train students’auditory-skills by letting them read the music sheet and sing it out. Ultimately, their expressiveness of music will be improved. However, to finally achieve this, one has to have very accurate sense of pitch, rhythm, tonality, be able to analyze the tempo and the aggressiveness of the sheet music, and use their imaginations.We investigate the current state of teaching of solfeggio in colleges and universities in Hunan Province that has long histories. We choose the solmization as a starting point. By looking into the teaching content of basic skills, song selection methods, we further study the purpose and significance of sightsinging. By training their intonation, rhythm and other aspects of singing, students’ability of sightsinging is improved. By practicing, their ability to percept, imagine, and express music is also promoted. Ultimately, they can sing expressively, with a high artistic taste. We also make suggestion on how to improve and develop the teaching.The thesis is organized as follows. In Chapter 1, we survey and analyze the current state of teaching of solfeggio in colleges and universities, located in Hunan Province, by looking into the courses’syllabus, curriculum, section, teaching materials, and utilization of solmization. In Chapter 2, we analyze how the teaching of solfeggio is conducted, from the aspects of reading music training, basic skills training, song selection principle learning, and expressive singing training, respectively. Through literature review, based on the author’s experience in solfeggio learning and practice, we use our own understanding to present relevant views. In Chapter 3, we put forward the basis of sectioning, common misunderstandings of solmization, content encriching, assessment methods and other aspects, and propose our view on how to further improve and develop the teaching of solfeggio.
