Characters in cartoon include persona and animal characters, of which most animal characters are performed by imitating human. Therefore, the research on animal characters can also be analyze with the design methods of persona. Animal characters has a very important position in cartoon, they are the soul of the cartoon. For the animal characters in the cartoon, external image design is only part of role modeling, only combining with rich character design can give the life to role. Perhaps because the cat becomes a human pet early, the cat becomes the most common animal character in the cartoon. Because the designer’s creative thinking is different, as well as different impression on cat’s habits for different region and nation, designers show a variety of cat animation for the audience. In order to explore the artistic style of animation character design, this paper starts from the principle of role design, takes the cat image in cartoon as the research subject, analyzes the similarities and differences of cat protagonist(cat cartoon) and the supporting role of cat(cat in the animation) in animation design through collecting, comparing and analyzing the difference of various cat characters in the cartoon, studies the design features of cat role modeling, character traits and performance, as well as influence brought by cultural background, production technique, the designer’s comprehensive quality and other factors. This research will help to understand the "cat" character in the animation, as well as to provide a valuable reference for the role modeling of cat in cartoon.
