Potential complement as one of the special Chinese grammar has always been a difficult point in the process of Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language. It’s special structures and complex limits in meaning and using often let foreign students make many mistakes when they are learning it. So, they would prefer to use “neng+v”rather than use potential complement to express the meaning of possibility. Though this style of expression is more conform to their habits------because of the specifieness of Chinese, different structures always divide the work to express a similar meaning------students are more perhaps to make some concentric errors. At same time,Chinese potential complement has some close connections with result complement and directional complement, how to distinguish these different kinds of complements and making a right choice when communicating is also a realistic problem. So it is really important to find a more scientific and reasonable way to teach potential complement.Currently, most studies of potential complement about Chinese have obtained rich achievements, but the studies of potential complement on Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language are still rared. Though, recent years some investigators have changed their targets to this direction, there are few people study Thai students’ learning situation. As Chinese is more and more popular in the world, there are more and more Thai students coming to learing Chinese. Thailand has also become the first country which we send Chinese teacher most. In 2015, I am so honoured to be send to Thailand to teach Chinese in Benchama Maharat school in the north east as a mission.In the process of teaching, we have known Thai students’ learning situation strictly,then we make questionnaires to investigate the situation of Thai students in learning potential complement further, and to classify the errors and try to find the reasons.What’s more, according to the analysis of types and reasons to the errors, and considering the situation of Thai students, we propose some advice for potential complement teaching in aspects of writing teaching material and teaching class. Wehope this can help us teach potential complement to Thai students.This dissertation involes five main parts as follows.First, to introduce the reason of choosing this topic, the sources of corpus, study methods, theoretical basis, and the overview of current studies of the potential complement.Second, based on contrastive analysis hypothesis, we compare Thai with Chinese in structure and meaning, to find the differences between this two languages when Thai people and Chinese people expressing the meaning of “possibility”. In order to provide some reference for analyzing the students’ errors in later chapters.Third, to collect the Thai students’ corpus in HSK corpora, and to analysis the data of the errors. Then, making questionnaires to investigate the situation of Thai students in learning potential complement. At last, to classify the errors and try to find the reasons.Fourth, according to the analysis of types and reasons to the errors, and considering the situation of Thai students, to propose some advice for potential complement teaching in aspects of writing teaching material and teaching class.Fifth, to summarize this dissertation.
