An Application Of Translation Variation Strategies In Escort Interpreting Focusing On Popular Science

Escort interpreting has taken a greater part among foreign exchanges in civil society with its content constantly broadening and deepening. Escort interpreting focusing on popular science is one of the most representative. Unlike other types of interpreting, escort interpreting is less formal in style and less clearer in logical cohesion as well as is characterized by short sentences and redundant information.Therefore, how to express such characteristics of popular science as being fun,scientific and literary flexibly has posed a challenge to the author.Translation variation strategies are based on translation variation theory proposed by Professor Huang Zhonglian, who states that the theory is summarized from the translation variation practice, which could in turn reflect the scientific principles and ideology of the translation variation strategies. Focusing on variation phenomenon, the theory studies the general characteristics as well as the rule in bid to find the general principle and methodology that could be applied to all the translation variation strategies. In the past, translation variation strategies were more applied in translation than in escort interpreting, hence there exists a possibility for combination.Entrusted by the College of Sociology of Shenyang Normal University, the author accompanied guests to Liaoning Paleontological Museum and provided escort interpreting service for them. Taking this interpreting practice as an example, the author sums up the characteristics of escort interpreting focusing on popular science,and employs three translation variation strategies, namely editing, addition and deletion to analyze the guidance of variation strategies for escort interpreting focusingon popular science.
