This is an English-Chinese translation report. The source text of the translation is selected from a book,A Guide to the End of the World: Everything You Never Wanted to Know, which is written by a British expert,Bill McGuire,in the field of geological hazards. The book covers five chapters in all,and the selected chapters are the chapter one and chapter two.Chapter One mainly tells us the history of the earth, and the principal features of the major natural hazards around the world.Chapter Two primarily presents the global warming and its influence on human's life. This book is opted basically for two reasons. So far,A Chinese translation version of this book has not been published yet.Besides, the translator takes an interest in technical texts. Therefore, this text is selected as the source text of this translation. In the process of translation, scientific and technological terminologies, compound sentences and complex sentences in the source text are challenges for the translator. These difficulties are presented from lexical and syntactic levels. The lexical difficulties embody the translation of scientific and technological terminologies and cultural-loaded phrases, while the syntactic difficulties contain the translation of attributive clauses as well as compound sentences and complex sentences. To deal with the lexical difficulties, the translation methods of annotation and liberal translation are employed;to address the syntactic ones, the translation methods of preposition, postposition, division, reinventing sentence structures, negation and amplification are adopted.During this translation practice, the translator strengthened her English-Chinese translation capability. In addition, the translation of this work can make Chinese readers further know about primary natural hazards.
