An English-Chinese Translation Report On Adrift In New York（Chapters 11-23）

This is an English-Chinese translation practice report.The excerpted parts for translation are Chapter 11-Chapter 23 of the novel Adrift in New York written by American author Horatio Alger who is one of the most popular American authors in the last 30 years of the 19 th century and perhaps the most socially influential American writer of his generation.The source text is about 22000 words and the target text is of34743 characters.Firstly,the report presents an introduction to the translation report.Then,it gives an introduction to the writer;the description of the source text the stylistic feature of the source text is also presented.After that,the report analyses the difficulties encountered during the translation process and puts forward translation methods employed in the light of these translation difficulties and analyses them in relation to examples from the source text.In detail,the difficulties at the lexical level mainly include the translation of proper nouns such as names of people and places,polysemy and the part of speech.The translation methods such as transliteration,diction and conversion are adopted to deal with the lexical difficulties.For the syntactic level,the translator focuses on the translation of attributive clause and complex sentences.And the translator resort to the translation methods of amplification,omission,division and inversion to cope with the complex sentences of the source text.Finally,the report makes a conclusion of the translation report.Through the translation practice,the translator has got an in-depth understanding about translation methods.New knowledge acquired includes idioms and phrases the translator has never learned before.Some experiences are accumulated in the process of completing the translation report.Suggestions and limitations are given so as to make better translations in the future.
