This translation report is based on the translation and analysis of Chapter One of the novel Reservoir 13 written by the British novelist Jon McGregor.The novel tells the story of the thirteen years' life of the villagers in the mountains after the missing of the poor girl,Rebacca Shaw.In 2012,McGregor was awarded the International Dublin Literature Prize for Even the Dogs.Skopos Theory is put forward by the German linguists,Hans Vermeer and Katherina Reiss,which involves three rules:Skopos Rule,Coherence Rule and Loyalty Rule.Coherence Rule refers to the readability and acceptability of the translated text.The point of translating literary works lies in that the translated text can be read smoothly,accepted and understood by the target language readers.So Coherence Rule of Skopos Theory can play a guiding role in translating literary works.The author has compared and analyzed her original version with her modified version of a dozen sample sentences from the selected novel.She also uses methods and techniques such as literal translation,free translation,amplification and conversion to improve coherence in the translated text.This translation report has made two achievements.On the one hand,Coherence rule can play an important role in translating novels.On the other hand,different translation methods and techniques should be applied in different types of sentences and texts.The significance of these achievements lie in that readability and acceptability are ensured by using these translation methods and techniques.Therefore,target language readers can get information from the translated text.
