A Project Report On The Translation Of Atlas Of Travel And Tourism Development (Chapter 8)

This is a translation project report on tourism translation. The source text is the eighth chapter of Atlas of Travel and Tourism Development. The author chooses this translation project for three reasons:First, the author is interested in tourism. Second, the author is keen to convey some tourism information about the countries in the Australian-Pacific region and to help travel lovers know more about tourism culture of these countries. This translation report is underpinned by Nida’s Functional Equivalence theory, and based on the author’s own translation experience. The purpose of writing this translation project report is to describe the problems encountered in translation process and the strategies used to solve them.This translation report mainly consists of project introduction, task description, case analysis and conclusion. Case analysis is the core part of this report. In this part the author first describes the translation problems, which can be concluded in two aspects:Firstly, there are a lot of terminologies, which make translation very difficult. Secondly, English and Chinese belong to different language system, so it is very hard to achieve form equivalence. After that the author analyses the translation theory used in translation. Finally the author lists six translation strategies used in translation process. They are literal translation and free translation, addition and omission, functional shift, change of voice, adjustment of order as well as division and combination. The author chooses some typical examples and analyzes them in detail.The author realizes the importance of translation strategies and the deficiency of her translation ability which can be seen in three aspects. First, the author’s knowledge of translation theory needs to be improved. Second, the author’s Chinese language skills desire further improvement so that her translation can be more flexible and skillful. Third, the translation is not coherent enough. Sometimes the translator forgets to refer to the context as well as the concrete situation.
