| This is a translation project report. The source text for the translation is extracted from Atlas of Travel and Tourism Development written by Myra Shackley.Along with the rapid development of global tourism industry, cultural communications among different countries are increasingly deepening, which leads to greater needs for good travel books. However, books exploring the tourism industry of foreign countries can rarely be found in China. In chronological order, Myra Shackley elaborates on the development of tourism in several continents with a clear and concise language, providing an overview of the history of global travel and tourism. Therefore, Atlas of Travel and Tourism Development is chosen for translation so as to help Chinese readers to learn more about tourism and how to travel.This report is based on the translation of Chapter 7 "South America and the Caribbean:Aztecs to Antarctic", which mainly explains the growth of tourism in South America, the Caribbean and Antarctica from Pre-colonial times to Post-colonial times. It presents in detail the whole process of translating this chapter and also discusses the problems and their solutions experienced in translation due to differences in language expressions between Chinese and English and some difficult long sentences in the source text. Guided by Hans J. Vermeer’s Skopos theory, the author adopted such translation strategies as conversion, sentence division, amplification and synthetic method and managed to produce a translation basically faithful to the source text and hopefully comprehensible to target readers.From this translation project, it can be seen that a translated version should be loyal to the original not only in content, but also in style. This requires the translator to be equipped with sufficient knowledge as well as good at both source and target languages so as to best transfer the source text into an adequate and acceptable target text on the basis of a precise understanding of the original. |
