Research On The Change Of The Fourth And Fifth Revision Of The Modern Chinese Dictionary

Modern Chinese Dictionary did a good job in the following three aspects during the fourth, fifth revision,to do a good job:Firstly, selectively include words as entries.The first, the dictionary include words actively and steadily according to the generality and stability of the words, in order to keep its contemporaneity and system. Specificly say, in the aspect of contemporaneity, the words that are included contain the following different kinds:the new words which are coming from Mandarin、 Special terms that are widespread、Mandarin words that come from Dialect words、 words from Hong Kong and Taiwan、loan words and archaic words that are used again. In the aspect of systematicness, the dictionary include the derived words which set up a corresponding relationship with those words that are already included in the dictionary, as well as a series of derived words.The second, make up the words that the former version should have included, such as common words and phrases、synonyms、specialized words and the words that are left out by the former version.The third, according to the noumenon study of language, the dictionary includes some would-be words, which include the ones with " 了/着" and the ones coming from trans-layered structure.Secondly, adequately delete the entries.During the fourth and fifth revision, Modern Chinese Dictionary deleted the infrequent words and merged Homonyms according to the meaning. In the aspect of type, the deleted words include the words which are archaic not used in modern life^ eliminated by synonyms> used in limited extent and non-words.Thirdly, timely revise the meanings.The first, according to the frequency, the dictionary added some meanings, including the new ones and pre-existing ones.The second, according to the change of the objective things and the deeper awareness, the dictionary modified the expression of the meanings, including the basic meanings and the additional meanings.The third, the meanings that should not have been included are deleted. These meanings are those dialectical、professional、non-existed、repeated and non-words meanings. According to the development of the time, the inappropriate words are deleted.Apparently, the two revisions made a great contribution to the perfection of the Modern Chinese Dictionary, but there are still some oversights. For example, in the aspect of including words as entries, it used different standards for words in the same system. Some of the words are used at very low frequency, and sometimes they are non-words. In the aspect of deleting words, many deleted ones are still used in modern life. In the aspect of revising the meanings, the dictionary explained for some non-words. Besides, the dictionary should have admit the mandarin identity of some words that came from Dialects.
