The modern advertisement of China is derived from the old shanghai commercial advertisements, which represents the key point of Chinese advertisements transformation from traditional mode to modern mode, and also is the first peak of the development of modern advertising. Furtherly, it makes a difference to research the Shanghai commercial advertisements for learning the Chinese history of advertising, graphic design as well as the commerce. There have been a radical change in Shanghai since the end of Qing dynasty. And during that period with the boom of Shanghai’s commerce caused by the collision between Chinese traditional culture and the western culture, commercial advertising firstly spread so rapidly and widely that changed people’s life.The key achievements in design of the old shanghai commercial advertisements and the history background from 1890 to 1937 were studied in the passage. And furthermore, the reason of the success of the old Shanghai’s commercial advertising was also researched and the design philosophy as well as the methods we can adopt today were also summarized.
