The Study On Totality Of Lukacs’ Theory Of Realism Novel

In the tradition of Western literature, a pursuit of realism has a long history. However, until the 18th century, realism, as a literary trend, officially entered the stage of history. In the 19th century, with up and down, realism meets a golden time of development. Thus, realism literature becomes one mainstream of the whole literary field. In the 20th century, with the development of society and literary trend, realism literature increasingly declined. Many people believe it seems that there is an estrangement between realism literature and modern life, writing models of the 19th century realism novels can’t reflect the complicated society and twisted inner world of human beings, realism is doomed to be marginalized. But, does realism literature really come to fade? If not, how can realism revival? Contemporary Marxist Georg Lukacs who is a pioneer and mainstay to maintain realism literature, deeply rethinks and comes up with a series of special views.Georg Lukacs is a well-known Marxist ideologist, philosopher and literary critic. He is faithful to the theory of Marxist realism literature and insists a writing principle which can project the reality and essences of society.Based on learning the thought of totality from Marxism, Lukacs constructs his theory system of realism novel. According to his study on the European realistic novels, on the one hand Lukacs realizes that the 19th century realism novels which possess irreplaceable literary achievement and value, is an ideal model. On the other hand, he is keenly aware of that ’real’ realism literature is encountering twin threats from naturalism and modernism in the 20th century. Thereupon, facing the crisis of realism, Lukacs puts forward self-rescue strategies with totality and attempts to protect and activate the ’real’ realism literature.This paper firstly aims to analyze the origin of Lukacs’thought of totality, and elaborates the contemporary background of his theory of realism novel. Then, it focuses on Lukacs’theory system of novel and his self-rescue methods of realism novel and studies feasibility of his strategies. At last, the paper will put his writing principals of the thought of totality into context of Chinese realism literature which is aimed at finding references for constructing a theory system of Chinese realism literature.
