The Aesthetic Character & Cultural Gene Of Contemporary Korean TV Drama

This dissertation put emphasis on the circumstance in which the Eastern and Western cultures blended to pursue TV drama in contemporary South Korea. In a word, the Western culture had a far-reaching influence on contemporary Korean TV drama at first. Then the Western culture got blended with the native culture of Korea. Finally, Korean TV drama set up a key basement that was supplemented by the native and traditional culture of Korea.The author considered that contemporary Korean TV drama embodied a series of remarkable characters to make up its native outline with strong style of the Eastern ideas. Firstly, it took a wide and particular field of vision from the Western culture to deal with the patterns of subject matter and by re-constructing themes. Secondly, on narrative contents it showed harmonious poetic quality of integrating foreign sentiment with the native and traditional implication. Thirdly, on ideas of thinking it coupled the democratic procedure with the man-based national contents. Fourthly, it brought out the new style of contemporary Korean TV drama via both the interaction and mutual replenishment and special integration between the aesthetic tension and ethical consciousness forward the valued emotions.It is important for us to evaluate the positive effects of the westernization that brought foreign elements into contemporary Korean TV drama, which promoted the deep reforms of both the forms and contents of it. The author analyzed the aesthetic characters of the westernization that brought foreign elements into Korean TV drama, which consisted of four parts. The first one is that the new patterns of TV dramas, which is composed by some dramatic elements, have got great development at present. The second one is that the social themes of it have been deepened and updated with a stronger style of realism. The third one is that its narrative representation has been centralized on the emotions of the figure images whose minds and behaviors just are the objective mirrors. The fourth one is that it has procured an orientation for all drama writers to create works, for all artists to perform works and for all directors to plot works in the front of the scenes and behind it. As to the essentials of the Oriental culture, the dissertation came to a conclusion that it embodies a reciprocated course of living vitality with external protocols and internal morals, which is driven by the dual meta-element, the so called YUAN or destiny and the so called XIN or faith, with a profound influence on people’s lot and the aesthetic sense of one’s life.Concretely speaking, there have been three kinds of the so called Cultural Gene in contemporary Korean TV drama, which include that of the Oriental culture, of the traditional and native culture of Korea and the Western culture. Just through the complicated interaction among the three kinds of cultural gene that formed the unique genotype of art in Korean TV drama can yield out own artistic phenotypes. And the author emphasized that the traditional and national culture element has played a key role in the three-culture interaction during the long period of time in Korea.It is reasonable to say that the mechanisms of interaction among the three-culture mentioned above by the author who took an analytic course of starting from the behavioral characteristics on the surface and the figures’ model in the inner time-space to the cultural causes and reasons in the deep circumstance. Not only coincide with the developmental laws of art including TV drama in Korea but also accord with the aesthetic principles of people to appreciate either natural scenery or artistic works. Therefore it may be significant for us to take it as a valuable mirror to raise the aesthetic quality and to deepen the cognitive meaning of the contemporary TV drama in China.
