A Report On Translating Neixiang County Yamen And Yamen Culture Of Nanyang City

Yamen culture is an important part of Chinese ancient culture, and reading the book with yamen culture is one way to learn Chinese culture. Neixiang County Yamen is announced by the State Council as the national key cultural relic’s protection units in 1996. Thus its translation plays an important role in disseminating culture internationally. However, there is no English version introducing the Naixiang County Yamen. As for the practice, it is the first time to translate the partial text of Neixiang County Yamen and Yamen Culture. Under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the author discusses some translation skills fitted for the yamen culture, so as to explore some effective translation strategies and methods in Chinese-English translation on Chinese yamen culture. The author intends to disseminate the local culture of Nanyang city and promote Chinese culture all over the world; meanwhile, the process of translation and study can improve the author’s translation ability as well.The author employs the functional equivalence theory as theoretical basis in this translation practice. The purpose for this report is to make the readers get the similar feelings, to realize the functional equivalence of the translated text and to transmit the Chinese traditional culture. The choosing of translation strategies and methods depends on the reader-oriented theory, which determines that the meaning is more important than the form. Therefore, under the guidance of the functional equivalence theory, the author analyses the text from words, sentences, and discourses, and then dialectically translates with domestication and foreignization strategies. The author takes partial text of Neixiang County Yamen and Yamen Culture as an example to discuss the difficulties of solving problems in the translation practice and analyzes the applications of the various translation methods, which include literal translation, literal translation with explanation, transliteration, pinyin with explanation, and pinyin with notes. The author tries to reflect the local culture and to handle the culture difference. The author selects proper translation methods to settle the problems when translating Chinese yamen culture-loaded words. This promotes the cultural communication between China and western countries.The report consists of five chapters. This is the main structure. Chapter one, introduction:the general situation of Neixiang County and Neixiang County Yamen, the background of the translation text; the meaning of the translation study, the structure of the paper. Chapter two, the theoretical guidance for the translation practice:the functional equivalence theory, the translation enlightenment on yamen culture under the guiding of the theory. Chapter three, task description:the main content of text, the language of the text, the preparation before the translation, the description to the translation process. Chapter four, discussion on the translation of the Neixiang County Yamen Culture under the functional equivalence theory:the translation of the text, the translation of the characteristic culture, the translation methods of the yamen culture. Chapter five, summary of the translation, the results, the shortcomings, the direction for further research.
