A Report On The Translation Of Chapter One And Part Of Chapter Two Of Arguing Over Texts

The word "stasis" originated from the ancient Greek court debate,which refers to the "conflict point" between the defendant and the plaintiff in court debate.Since ancient time,many rhetoricians have been constantly exploring and studying stases and stases theory.Some scholars,such as Yuan Ying and Yang Yumei,have introduced this classical stases theory into China.However,there are very few studies on the stases theory in China,and there are still many deficiencies in the study of the stases theory.The book Arguing over Texts by Martin Camper analyzes the stases theory through some specific cases,providing a descriptive framework for scholars which have very high theoretical and practical value.This translation practice material is selected from chapter one and chapter two of Arguing over Texts.The first chapter mainly introduces the interpretive stases and puts forward six interpretive stases.The excerpt of the second chapter shows us the ambiguity stasis.Based on the principle of "authenticity" principle,the author mainly uses literal translation and free translation.This translation practice report mainly analyzes the difficulties encountered in translation practice from three aspects:vocabulary,syntax and discourse.At the lexical level,this paper mainly starts from the translation of terms,explores the translation skills of title of the book and academic terms,and also studies when to converse the part of speech and how to choose the meaning of words.At the syntactic level,this paper mainly studies the translation of quotations,long and difficult sentences,and nominal clauses,as well as the translation of attributive and passive clauses.At discourse level,this paper mainly studies the cohesion and coherence of discourse.The author hopes that this translation practice can be helpful to the future domestic research on the theoretical aspects of the stases theory.
