Along with the upgrading of China-ASEAN Free Trade Area, economic cooperation between Brunei Darussalam and Guangxi, China has become closer and deeper with each passing day. The Construction Plan for Brunei-Guangxi Economic Corridor is a feasibility study on regional economic cooperation drafted by Guangxi Department of Commerce. As a political and economic text with a total of 11,964 Chinese characters, it contains a detailed description of the current situation of the economic cooperation between Guangxi and Brunei, an analysis of the conditions and potentials for deepening bilateral cooperation, the general approaches, fundamental principles, spatial layout and working measures for further bilateral cooperation, and an annex of the survey of Brunei Darussalam. Thus, the English translation and relevant studies of the Plan is of great practical significance. This project report describes how the translation project is conducted, including task description, pre-translation preparation, translation process, case studies and related translation experience. According to Peter Newmark’s text typology, the source text is defined as the informative text concerning politics and economy. As the translation target text is mainly used for communication, the translator adopts communicative translation method initiated by Newmark in translation. In the light of Newmark’s text typology, the translator analyzes some expressions with Chinese characteristics:1) lexically, the translator would adopt such tactics as using prepositions and emitting redundant words and supplementing necessary information in dealing with names of projects and documents and acronyms with numerals; 2) syntactically, the translator would adjust sentence order or structure in translating run-on sentences or sentences with comma splices to avoid Chinglish in the target text, improve its readability and achieve better communicative result.Considering that the target readers of the translated text are mainly Bruneian whose mother language is not English and the translation is used for communication, the translator applies Peter Newmark’s text typology and communicative translation in translation aiming to produce a more readable and idiomatic translated text and achieve a better communicative effect on the basis of faithfulness to the source text. It is hoped that this report can provide some thoughts and inspiration for further relevant studies.
