Employing Newmark’s theory as the theoretical framework and taking the E-C translation of Chinese Art as a case study, the author discusses the application of communicative translation in E-C translation of informative text. First, the thesis reviews Newmark’s translation theory, focusing on the text typology, semantic translation and communicative translation. Second, based on the author’s translation practice and Newmark’s theory, emphasis is put on the translation of artistic terms, ambiguous words and complicated sentences. In view of the text typology and characteristics of communicative translation (CT), the author proposes that attention should be paid to three aspects during the translation of informative text:function, accuracy and readability. In light of the three emphases, translators are supposed to adopt appropriate strategies flexibly, such as addition, conversion and reconstruction. Hence, the author intends to make the translated text fulfill the function of transmitting information, and produce on its readers an effect as close as possible to that obtained on the readers of the original text.
