To start with, translation, generally speaking, is a process of converting information faithfully and smoothly from a source language into a target language. To make the original contents and thoughts clear and accurate, translation techniques, such as amplification, omission, restructuring and conversion are indispensible.Only by using these techniques appropriately can a translator make a fluent and correct translation.Besides, by making a contrast between English and Chinese, it is obvious that they are two languages with enormous discrepancies. Specifically, on one hand, English is a synthetic-analytic language, while Chinese is an analytic language. On the other hand, English is static while Chinese is dynamic. Consequently, there is a great diversity existing between Chinese and English in syntax, vocabulary, expression, means of rhetoric, way of thinking, etc. As a consequence of this, stiff translation is neither feasible nor advisable. Therefore, conversion of parts of speech becomes the crux of boosting the quality of translation and at the same time the hinge of making the original information more understandable and acceptable to target readers. On the basis of a translation practice the author participated in, this report was written. In this report, in terms of word class, the author has specified the conversion of English nouns, verbs, adjectives, prepositions and adverbs respectively through drawing examples from this translation practice. Apart from that, on account of the contrast between English and Chinese, the author has come up with several pragmatic ideas concerning conversion of parts of speech, hoping that other translators could draw something from them.
