Translation is a complex language activity, it is to express clearly and accurately the content and thought of one language in another language.English and Chinese are entirely different. English belongs to the Indo-European language family, and Chinese belongs to the Sino-Tibetan language family. English and Chinese are different in syntax, vocabulary, habit of expression, way of thinking which also adds difficulties to the translation between two languages. In the process of translation between this two languages, translator should not only pay attention to the transmission of the original content but also the original ideas. But due to the difference between two languages, translators will encounter many problems in order to achieve this requirement. So all kinds of translation skills and strategies are needed in translation, such as amplification, omission, conversion of parts of speech, division, combination and etc. Only by using these translation skills properly can the translator make the translation more fluent and coherent.Conversion of parts of speech is a commonly-used skill in translation. On account of the difference in language structure and expression of the languages, conversion of parts of speech should be used in order to make the translation fluent, smooth and clear. This paper will explore the application of conversion of parts of speech in translation practice hoping to give help to translation studies in the future and some inspiration to literary translation practice.
